The Renaissance and Reformation period lasted from 1350-1600. The word renaissance means rebirth, in this case it would mean the rebirth of language and art. The Renaissance period started with the death of the Middle Ages. It was also the beginning of the Modern Times. The Italian Renaissance was the area that really started this period; Italy could be credited for the birth of Renaissance and this is why Italy was the cutural center of Europe.

The Renaissance Period all started in Florence, Italy by Giovanni Medici in 1397. Florence was the cultural center of Italy. Giovanni was know for building project to beautify Florence. Giovanni made the Medici family the leading family of Florence. Another important Medici was Lorenzo Medici. Lorenzo ruled Florence from 1469-1492. He also set up Ambassadors, or diplomatic agents of a nation. Ambassadors discussed political and commerercial affairs. The Medicis was a very important group from Italy.

There were many great artists and authors coming out of the Renaissance Period. Among the many paintings of Italy, Masaccio stood out among others. Masaccio was know for his fresco art. Fresco is painting done on fresh, wet plaster with water-based paints. Masaccio's have art come alive. Another important paint/sculptor, and architect was Michelangelo. Michelangelo was know for painting the ceiling of the famous Sistine Chapel in Rome. Finally Leonardo da Vinci was another well known artist. Leonardo paint the famous Mona Lisa. There was also many important writers. Some important writers are Dante, Geoffrey Chaucer, Niccolo Machiavelli, and many others. Without these important people Renaissance Culture would have been much differenct.

Top 5 Most Important People from the Renaissance and Reformation Period:

1. Giovanni Medici- Giovanni was credited with starting the Renaissance Period in 1397. He was also known for the building project to beautify Florence. He allowed his faimly name to be known making the Medici family the leading family of Florence.
2. Martin Luther- Martin's main achievement was creating the Lutheranism. He was also know as the creator of The Ninety-five Theses, a list of problems he found with the church at that time. Luther was declared an outlaw by the church because of his ideas.
3. Leonardo da Vinci-Leonardo is widely known as the artist of the Mona Lisa, one of the most famous paintings in the world. It created this masterpiece by mastering the art of realistic painting. He created his paintings in the High Renaissance, with other artistic giants.
4. Francesco Petrarch- Francesco lived from 1304 to 1371. Francesco was know as the Father of Italian Humanism. He accomplished this by searching all across Europe for old Latin manuscripts. He pushed Liberal Arts, the education path to virtue and wisdom.
5. Ignatius of Loyola- Ignatiues was known as the creator of the Jesuits group, or The Society of Jesus. Loyola gathered a small group of followers and was then recognized as a religiues order by the pope in 1540.

5 Terms used in the Renaissance and Reformation Period:

  1. Urban Society: A place where the city is the center of political, economic, and social life. An example would be like Las Vegas or Hollywood.
  2. Humanism: A key intellectual movement during the Renaissance period that was based on the study of the classics, which are older books written in ancient Greece and Rome.
  3. Fresco: A painting done on fresh, wet plaster with water-based paints. Masaccio used this method of painting a lot to make them come alive.
  4. Salvation: Acceptance into Heaven that the Christian Church promises to one that lives a holy life. This gives Christians something to work for through faithful actions.
  5. The Ninety-five Theses: Martin Luthor made this list to say what he thought was wrong about the Catholic Church. Pope Leo X at the time didn't take it seriously.
